How I decided to study in Chile
EVERYBODY AND THEIR MAMA GOES TO EUROPE
After attending an orientation session at my university’s study abroad office, I still wasn’t sure about where I wanted to go. I just knew that I wanted to go to a Spanish speaking country and that I didn’t want to go to Spain. I didn’t want to go to Spain because literally EVERYBODY AND THEIR MAMA goes to Europe.
I wanted an experience that was unique to me and as far as I can recall, I still haven’t met many other students from my university who have spent a semester or more in South America. As a matter of fact, I’m almost sure that I can count the number of them on just one hand.
Anywho, I knew that Latin America was up for grabs but I still didn’t know which country to choose. As far as I can remember, after consulting with my regional advisor we came to the conclusion that my options were Mexico, Ecuador, Costa Rica, and Chile. Ultimately I decided against Mexico because it was too close to home. I chose against Costa Rica because I wanted to cross off another continent on my bucket list and geographically speaking, it’s still a part of North America.
Ultimately, I chose Chile because it was the country that I knew the least about. I wanted to take on an adventure with no pre-conceived notions and I did just that.
I cracked my knuckles and began researching, it was time to figure out exactly how to get there.
