The perfect study playlist
I don't know about you but I truly despise the question, "What do you like to do for fun?" (🙄 I don't know) I try to figure out the best way to say "Hanging out at home in my pajamas," but it really comes out to be as plain and simple as that. I'm an introvert! Being out and around people all day drains me. I'm almost always plotting on how to get back to my happy place.
Let's not get confused, when I'm at home "chillin" I do way more than scrolling through my newsfeed and taking naps. I consider my lounging around to be a form of art. In better words:
Music has been my best friend ever since I was a little girl. [*WATCH THIS: Me rapping at my 7th grade talent show.] I enjoy writing songs, analyzing lyrics, and I've even dabbled a little in producing (it was awful - trust me). Although my career as a rapper is far beyond over and done, my new 'thing' is making playlists.
For the past month or so I've been really low key - getting by and enjoying life without the unnecessary. The same wave I've been on mentally has been reflected in my choice of music. A few months back when my yoga instructor went MIA, her replacement blessed our class with Alex Al's playlist of chill hip-hop instrumentals. His smooth collection gives you that Living Single vibe with jazzed out melodies and simple loops. Nonetheless, it inspired me.
We don't take enough time to embrace life (or music) in its simplicity.
Don’t get me wrong, like Donald Glover said, Bad and Boujee was great. [*READ: 10 Reason Donald Glover Was Right About Migos' Bad and Boujee] However, my appreciation always goes back to records that take me back to the way I felt when I first fell in love with hip-hop.
Reminiscent of how Dre felt when he told Sid she was “the perfect verse over a tight beat,” these are the ones that gave me the feeling of when I first met H.E.R.
[DISCLAIMER: The following playlist contains more than just hip-hop.]
This is the perfect playlist for anything chill: relaxing after a long day, studying, walking in the park, you name it. Here's a brief overview of what's currently on my playlist:
Oldies, but goodies.
Black Sheep, Digable Planets, A Tribe Called Quest, The Pharcyde, CampLo
Modern-day visionaries.
Solange, The Internet, J. Cole, Kendrick Lamar, Childish Gambino, (makeupless) Alicia Keys
Something you (maybe) haven't heard of.
Oddisee, Omar, Alina Baraz & Galimatias, Theophilus London, Noname, NxWorries
The best way to put it is like this...if you like some of the names mentioned above, you'll likely enjoy the playlist as a whole. Put it on shuffle (please put it on shuffle); knock out your to-do list; and don't forget to share some feedback.
