Taking time "off the grid"

Taking time "off the grid"

I just spent the past 20-ish days taking a break from social media.

The first week was really easy (I had covid and just wanted to sleep anyway). My second week without social felt like a nice, new normal I could get used to. And the third week…well, let’s just say by the third week, I was itching to take selfies and share them with all my friends instantaneously 🤷🏾‍♀️

Whether you are new to this or true to this, I highly recommend taking social media breaks every now and then to get re-centered and check-in with yourself.

For me, it helps quiet down the outside noise so I can get reacquainted with my goals and intentions. It reminds me to slow down, spend real quality time with myself, and engage in exploring my interests.

As an extroverted introvert, I often find myself looking for balance. I think to myself, “What do I need to carry me through this next chapter? Is it rest, sleep, deep thought, alone time, or social time?” Who knows?!

Back on December 26th, I decided it was quiet time which also meant a break from social.

My intention in 2022 is to be more thoughtful, consistent, and adaptable. These are muscles I can only flex when I am well-rested and focused.

Last year, I learned so much about me through analysis and keeping track of metrics through journals and pictures.

I discovered more interests and goals I want to explore; the challenges and risks I want to take; and I even studied my habits regarding eating, drinking, sleep cycles, and screen time.

At the conclusion of my self-evaluation, to my displeasure, I found myself inconsistent and distracted. This is not surprising for someone diagnosed as inattentive… But I also realized I have more control over my habits than my impulses allowed me to see.

I am continuing to walk the path towards consistency by unplugging more to focus.

Whether that’s unplugging from the media, social, the news, or screens, it doesn’t really matter which one. I simply remind myself to turn down all outside distractions and focus on accepting what is.

On most days, that’s much easier said than done. But on the days I am patient in my approach, I experience success. On days I show myself grace (and ask God for it), again, I experience success.

My strategies for self-care and time “off the grid” have developed over time and now I’m committing to more regular (read: quarterly) social media breaks.

Have you ever considered taking a break from social? Here are 6 reasons you may consider doing so:

  1. You want to reduce your screen time

  2. You are trying to set new habits

  3. Your brain needs a break

  4. You want to reconnect with nature and others

  5. You feel annoyed with gossip and trending topics

  6. You want to prioritize quiet time and simpler living

Happy 2022! I hope you enjoy some intentional time “off the grid” this year. Share this graphic with a friend who needs a break :)

Sincerely,
Takira
